Western Digital Plans to Invest $1.9 Billion in Michigan Semiconductor Fab

Project to Create 1,200 Jobs in Genesee County

Facility to be Built in Mundy Township

Western Digital, a California-based data storage company, announced plans to invest $1.9 billion in a new semiconductor fabrication facility in Mundy Township, Genesee County. The project is expected to create 1,200 jobs in the region.

The facility will produce advanced NAND flash memory wafers, which are used in a variety of electronic devices, including smartphones, computers, and data centers. Western Digital said the new fab will help meet the growing demand for data storage as the world becomes increasingly digital.

The project is contingent on approval of state and local incentives. Western Digital said it expects to begin construction on the facility in 2023 and start production in 2025.

The investment is a major boost for the Michigan economy. The state has been working to attract and retain semiconductor manufacturers, which are seen as key to the future of the automotive and technology industries.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the Western Digital project is "a testament to Michigan's commitment to being a leader in the semiconductor industry." She said the investment will create jobs and help the state compete in the global economy.

Western Digital is one of the world's largest manufacturers of data storage devices. The company has been in business for over 50 years and employs over 20,000 people worldwide.
